IFS Standard: News Regarding the Detection of Metals and Foreign Particles

NEW VERSION OF THE IFS STANDARD: NEWS REGARDING THE DETECTION OF METALS AND FOREIGN PARTICLES

Last April, a new version of the IFS standard regulations was published, which will have a transition period from October 1 of this year and which will be mandatory from January 1, 2024. The reasons for this review are the need for alignment with the new Codex Alimentarius, the reference criteria of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI 2020) and the upcoming ISO 22003-2 for product and process standards.

The highlight of this new version is its depth, that is, it affects many points of the standard: regulation of audit requirements, change of terms, modifications in the B score, KO requirements, inclusion of terms such as legality and authenticity, and others.

Maintenance and operation of metal detection systems.

Regarding our subject, the detection and separation of metals, the new features included in version 8 compared to version 7 are:

  1. Maintenance of metal detectors. The standard already provides that when metal detectors are required, they will be installed in a way that guarantees maximum detection efficiency to avoid subsequent contamination. But as a novelty, it is added that these will undergo maintenance to avoid malfunctioning at least once in a period of 12 months, or whenever significant changes occur. That is, it will now be mandatory to carry out maintenance work at least once a year.
  2. Functional tests of metal detectors. The standard already requires specifying the precision of all equipment and methods designed to detect and/or eliminate foreign materials, and that performance tests be carried out on said equipment and methods, but the novelty is that it regulates it with a risk-based frequency. Until now, such tests must simply be periodic. Furthermore, in the event of a malfunction, corrective measures will not be documented, but rather the impact on products and processes will be evaluated.
